But I actually went to a comic store and bought a few <strike>comics</strike> graphic novels! Typically I’m not a fan of the genre. I like words and a lot of them and quite frankly I want reallllly good artwork with a realllly good story line. Andrew would be so proud of me right now!

Originally, I went in to purchase Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Graphic Novel) and only that one. The artwork is incredible and it’s very true to the series by Laurell K. Hamilton. The owners of the store were there and I got a full on edumacation on graphic novels.

In fact, I learned things that I probably will never, ever remember. But they were so very nice!

I tried to explain to them that my friend Andrew spent the better part of a year trying to get me to read graphic novels. Some he succeeded with. I really enjoyed Fray by Buffy legend Joss Whedon. But he failed in others — such as the X-Men series and the Justice League.

Well, after much talk I found that I have a lot of the same reading tastes as the wife. And she recommended Fables Vol. 1: Legends in Exile but I wasn’t sure I wanted to invest just yet — as I said, I’m pretty picky. The husband tried to talk me into Preludes and Nocturnes (The Sandman, Vol. 1) by Neil Gaiman. I was at a loss as to how to let them down gently, when the husband told me to choose one. So I pointed to Fables and he said, “Borrow this one, see if you like it and bring it back in when you come get the second issue of Anita. That way you’ll know if you want to buy it.” How cool is that? I couldn’t believe he was going to let me — a virtual stranger — take home a mint copy to “try it out!”

So while perusing the store and trying to get a handle on how comics are ordered and set-up and how to see what issue you’re getting I spied another one that I ultimately bought. Fallen Angel Volume 1

The husband gave me some background on this comic because I certainly didn’t want to purchase one where 5 minutes after I read it I would be on the internet trying to find out what the heck was going on — like the X-Men series.

The premise sounded promising. A fallen angel in the city of Bete Noir where you can call on her for help but you might not like the results. The artwork seems phenomenal. I haven’t read this one yet. That’s going to be for tomorrow. I’ll also read Fables then too.
So I hope that I enjoy them. I’d like to over come my snobby phobia of <strike>comics</strike> graphic novels. I’d like to find some that are both artistic and have a great story.

So anyone have any recommendations for something to try?

It’s finally going to happen. But not on screen. Our favorite vampire slayer is going to be back — in comic form. Joss Whedon has finally scrounged up enough time to write what would have been “season 8? and sent it off to Dark Horse Comics where it will be in the grubby hands of fanatics like myself in March ‘07.Whedon has created the overall arc of where he wants the series to go and so far it looks like he will be writing the first four, the last four and probably a few others. He hints that some of the old writers might be involved in the writing as well. And no matter who writes what, he has to approve it. The artist is Georges Jeanty for all you comic geeks in the know about the artists (I don’t know one artist from the next). TV Guide has an interview with Joss that answers some general questions — like will Spike and/or Angel appear. Seems there has to be some negotiations since IDW owns the rights to Angel comics were Spike is a character.

So this is it, Buffy fans! These 20-30 “episodes” will be officially part of the Buffy canon.
